An envelope containing white powder and a death threat against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at the Israeli consulate in New York Friday. While the powder was being examined, the building was shut down and the employees were not allowed to leave the consulate.
The threat, which was reportedly written in English, was taken very seriously and New York police officers began to comb the area. The consulate was reopened about an hour later.
Consul General of Israel in New York Dani Dayan was not in the building when the incident took place. Dayan was on his way to greet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the airport. Next week, Netanyahu will be attending this year’s annual UN General Assembly session and meeting with US President Donald Trump.
