The company has asked its 330 million users to change their passwords after discovering an internal bug that interfered with the hashing process.

Twitter on Thursday urged its users to change their passwords after discovering an internal bug that prevented passwords from being hashed properly.

Though it said no information is believed to have left the system, Twitter still asked its 330 million users to change their passwords “out of an abundance of caution.”

Hashing is the process in which passwords are transformed into a seemingly-random string of characters. This particular bug caused users’ passwords to be stored unmasked in Twitter’s internal log.

“Due to a bug, passwords were written to an internal log before completing the hashing process,” Twitter explained in a blog post. “We found this error ourselves, removed the passwords, and are implementing plans to prevent this bug from happening again.”
