This year’s laureates of the prestigious Wolf Prize were announced Monday during an event attended by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. Among the laureates, who will receive the prize in May during a state ceremony at the Knesset, is British singer and songwriter Paul McCartney. According to Israel News Company, a close associate of McCartney said that he has expressed initial willingness to come to Israel to receive the honor.

The former Beatles member will likely be targeted by BDS activists if his plans to come to Israel are officially confirmed. In order to receive the $100,000 prize, each laureate is required to attend the official ceremony in Jerusalem.

“Sir Paul McCartney is one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time,” the Wolf Foundation explained. “With 60 gold records and more than 100 million single copies sold during his career, McCartney is undoubtedly the most commercially successful performer and writer of popular music. McCartney is not only a rock musician; he is considered a British institution, an icon like warm beer and cricket; he is part of the British identity.”

The Wolf Prize is an internationally-recognized award granted in Israel to scientists and artists. The honor has been handed out to laureates since 1978 in six fields: agriculture, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, physics and art. The art field includes four categories: architecture, music, painting and sculpture.
