After the US announced that it will not present its Middle East plan so long as the rift with the Palestinians continue, Jerusalem seems optimistic. According to estimates, the US government will exact a price from the Palestinians and additional pro-Israel measures could be taken by Washington.

After Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas announced the freezing of ties with the US Consulate in East Jerusalem following US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, the Israeli government believes that so long as Abbas refuses to budge, the Trump administration will exact a price. Therefore, Jerusalem hopes to see further pro-Israel measures taken by the American government.

Israeli Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz spoke with Likud members and said that in his opinion, Israel can request from the US to back the Greater Jerusalem bill, recognize Israeli sovereignty and maybe even recognize Israel as a Jewish nation – or any other step that will not establish irreversible concrete facts that could prevent a diplomatic agreement. However, the Israeli government is keeping quiet, restrained and patient in order to let the Trump administration deal with the Palestinians’ rejection.

The White House understands that due to the severed ties announced by the Palestinians, Trump cannot present his plan for peace in the Middle East.
