Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas accepted the invitation of the Pope to pray together for peace at the Vatican next month. “The President of the country always agrees to any initiative that can promote peace,” Peres stated.
Earlier on, Pope Francis told Abu Mazen during a press conference in Bethlehem: “Here, in the birth place of the prince of peace, I invite you, President Abbas together with President Peres to join me in a heartfelt prayer for the gift of peace. I offer my home, the Vatican, towards this goal.”
Vatican spokesman Father Lombardi stated that it was unprecedented: “We all have a responsibility to be instruments of peace. It’s hard to build peace, but to live without peace is a lasting torment.”
