On Tuesday, the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah published a warning via flyers and video claiming Lebanese rights to and ownership of the disputed maritime border territory near several gas fields located in Israeli waters.
The flyer, obtained by Yedioth Ahoronot, warned, “Anyone who goes after oil and gas in the economic waters of Lebanon will lose his oil sites- and he knows that Lebanon is capable of doing so.”
The video included a picture of Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who recently claimed that the disputed territory belonged to Israel. The maritime border between Israel and Lebanon has long been a topic of controversy between Israel and Lebanon. Further, the video showed Israel’s oil rigs and then a clip of a missile being fired, portraying a potential attack that Hezbollah might desire to carry out.
The video comes in response to the remarks on the matter that Lieberman made last week. The Israeli defense minister accused Lebanon of provoking its southern neighbor and said that Israel has returned to the internationally recognized borders and will go as far as building a wall to protect its territory. This led to outrage in Lebanon as it claims that the territory Israel declared belongs to Lebanon.
Sources indicate that the video and flyers may be a means of gaining political advantage in the upcoming Lebanese election. Lebanese politicians, such as the country’s president and prime minister, are also making the disputed territory an issue in their campaign speeches.
