Eli Sharvit became the new commander of the Israeli Navy today (Monday). Sharvit received the rank of Major-General during a ceremony that was conducted at the Kirya in Tel Aviv. Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot and Israeli General Staff members attended the ceremony. Sharvit, whose most recent position was the head of the naval headquarters, replaced Major-General Ram Rothberg.

“This is precisely the time, as the Middle East is changing, when the naval superiority is a critical element of protecting Israel’s security,” said Sharvit during the ceremony.

Lieberman thanked Rothberg for his service and welcomed Sharvit to his new position: “Ram, thank you for your service and Eli, good luck on your new path. I’m pleased that the navy is an essential part of the IDF and wish you two luck in the future.”
