The IDF confirmed on Sunday that it destroyed a terror tunnel stretching from Gaza to Egypt that crossed into Israeli territory directly under the Kerem Shalom border crossing. The airstrike on the tunnel took place late Saturday night. The 1.5-kilometer (about 0.93-mile) long tunnel, which passed under several strategic Israeli targets such as a gas pipeline, was completely destroyed in the strike.
The tunnel belonged to Hamas and could have been used to smuggle weapons and terrorists from Egypt into the Gaza Strip. In addition, it could have been used as an attack tunnel to carry out a serious terror attack on the border crossing from the Egyptian side.

According to reports, the IDF was made aware of the tunnel a few weeks ago after it was detected by the army’s advanced technology. The Israeli fighter jets struck the tunnel at the Gaza entrance point.
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman commended the forces for carrying out the “professional and precise” operation. “This was a clear violation of Israeli sovereignty,” he added. “The destruction of the attack tunnel infrastructure is an essential element of the policy of consistently harming Hamas’s strategic capabilities.”

“This morning, the IDF completed the destruction of the third Hamas terror tunnel infiltrating Israeli territory in the past 2 months using the latest technology, intelligence, and operational capabilities,” the IDF Spokesperson tweeted on Sunday morning. “This is a severe breach of Israel’s sovereignty. Hamas is responsible for the consequences and chooses time after time to jeopardize the welfare of the citizens of Gaza.”
A short while ago, the IDF targeted a terror infrastructure using fighter jets in the southern Rafah region, adjacent to the Egypt-Gaza border. The Hamas terror organization is accountable for all activity in and from the Gaza Strip
