The IDF Parole Board decided on Monday to shorten Elor Azaria’s sentence by a third. Azaria, who was convicted of manslaughter for shooting and killing a neutralized Palestinian terrorist in Hebron, will be released on May 10 after serving nine months of a 14-month sentence.
Last week, the IDF Parole Board convened to discuss Azaria’s request to be released after serving half of his sentence. During the hearing, the prosecution argued against Azaria’s release. Azaria told the board that he would like to be home before Passover, which is also called the festival of freedom.
In September 2017, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot reduced Azaria’s 18-month sentence by four months. Azaria began serving his sentence in August 2017, over a year after the shooting took place.
