Major General Issam Zahreddine from Assad’s army was injured in an underground explosion in Deir ez-Zor and was pronounced dead shortly after. Zahreddine was Druze and commanded the Syrian Republican Guard.

Syrian Major General Issam Zahreddine, who commanded the Syrian Republican Guard, was killed today (Wednesday) during fighting near the city of Deir ez-Zor, Al Mayadeen News reported. The senior-level Druze general’s death is a significant loss for Assad’s army.
According to the Arab news outlet’s report, Zahreddine was killed in an underground explosion. Hezbollah’s Al-Manar news outlet also confirmed reports concerning Zahreddine’s death.

About one month ago, ISIS’s siege was lifted from the eastern part of the city in which Zahreddine was killed. The siege on the city began in 2014 and was breached after Syrian Army and Hezbollah forces entered the city’s government enclave.
