Syrian civilians were treated for chlorine gas poisoning on Sunday after an attack by the regime’s forces in Syria’s Idlib province, according to multiple reports.  At least ten people were reportedly killed in the attack and dozens were injured.

Human rights monitors reported that five civilians suffered from asphyxiation after “a bad smell” spread in the town of Saraqeb during an airstrike.  In addition, six others were reportedly killed by strikes carried out by Russian and Syrian military forces. A hospital was reportedly targeted in the town of Maarrat Al-Nu’man.

As previously reported by JOL, a US official on Thursday said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces may be developing “new types” of chemical weapons. A UN report from September determined that Assad’s forces had used chemical weapons dozens of times during the civil war, including a sarin gas attack on the town of Khan Shaykhun in April, which killed at least 80 civilians.

On Saturday, Syria rejected the accusations and denied using chemical weapons, dismissing the claims as “lies.” “The Foreign and Expatriates Ministry condemned the false allegations made by the United States in which it accused the Syrian government of using chemical weapons in the Eastern Ghouta in Damascus countryside,” said a ministry official, cited by Syrian’s state-run news agency SANA.
