Avichai Rontzki, formerly the IDF’s Chief Military Rabbi, passed away on Sunday at the age of 66 after a long battle with cancer.

Rontzki was laid to rest in the settlement of Itamar, with hundreds present to pay their last respects. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, six years after completing his tenure as the IDF’s Chief Military Rabbi.

In the late 2000s, Rontzki campaigned for organ donations – a sensitive issue within the religious community. He even publicly announced that he had signed a donor card himself.
