The Netanyahu family dog, Kaya, passed away Monday after having leg surgery. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his grief on Facebook, writing: “Kaya our love is no longer with us. Two months ago, Kaya had a herniated disk in her neck that paralyzed her. She went through two difficult surgeries that attempted to allow her to walk again. After hydrotherapy and pressure treatments that didn’t succeed, we—my wife Sara, Yair and Avner—gathered the day before yesterday to say goodbye.
Avner Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son, returned from his vacation in Australia to spend time by her side. He wrote her an obituary on his Instagram page: “Thank you for being the best dog that we could have had.”
The Netanyahu family dog garnered fame when she bit Knesset Member Sharren Haskel (Likud) and the husband of Israeli Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Hotovely. She spent ten days quarantined in the Jerusalem Municipality’s kennel after these events. Kaya even bit the Prime Minister himself, which led to his getting a tetanus shot from his personal doctor.
Following Kaya’s experience in the kennel, the Israeli Knesset began authorizing a bill that would allow dogs to be quarantined at home.
