19-year-old Abed al-Karim Adel Asi, who murdered Itamar Ben Gal in Ariel on Monday, spent most of his life moving from one facility for unprivileged youth to another. However, a man who knew Asi from one of them says he was well liked and never seemed to pose any danger.

A day after the deadly terror attack near Ariel, authorities are still trying to figure out what made Abed al-Karim Adel Asi, 19, run towards Itamar Ben Gal, a father of four, and stab him mercilessly in the chest.
According to a man who knew Asi from one of the facilities for unprivileged youth he had been through, Asi was well liked among the staff and the other teens. “When I heard the name, I was shocked,” the man said.
“The staff liked him a lot, as did the rest of the teens who were there,” he added. “He liked us too. There was never any mention of nationalistic issues. He was never interested in politics and never expressed any hatred towards us.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Asi’s mother, who had been absent from his life from an early age, publicly condemned his actions and called on him to turn himself in. She added that she had noticed in the past her son’s “violent and problematic” behavior.
