Last night (Friday), windsurfer Shahar Tzuberi secured his seat on the Israeli Olympic delegation for the 2016 Rio games, which will take place in August.
Tzuberi defeated his rival Nimrod Mashiah, ensuring his spot on Israel’s Olympic delegation. In Rio, Tzuberi will represent Israel for the third time in his career. In the 2008 Beijing games, Tzuberi won the bronze medal for male windsurfing. In the 2012 London games, he returned to Israel empty handed.
Tzuberi’s rivalry with Mashiah has been going on for several years: Just last week, Mashiah blamed Tzuberi for intentionally ruining his surf during an important international competition. According to Mashiah, Tzuberi’s unsportsmanlike actions towards him were aimed at weakening his chances of winning the single male windsurfing spot on the Israeli delegation.
Also, female windsurfer Maayan Davidovich ensured her spot on the Israeli delegation to Brazil yesterday. The Israeli delegation for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games is currently made up of 25 athletes.
