Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Wednesday harshly attacked US President Donald Trump’s intention to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Speaking to local reporters, Khamenei referred to Jerusalem by using the Arabic name for the city, Quds. “The Palestinians will be free, the people of Palestine will be victorious in the end,” he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas issued a letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres, asking him to intervene in Trump’s plan.

Declaring Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moving the US embassy there will “lead to a substantial change in the American position on the Palestinian issue,” Abbas wrote, “and will significantly disrupt the efforts to revive the peace process.”

As part of a “day of rage” announced jointly by Hamas, Fatah and other groups, Palestinian activists on Wednesday burned pictures of Trump and the Israeli flag.
