The day before US President Donald Trump’s highly anticipated speech, the world is increasingly pressuring Trump not to declare Jerusalem as the Israeli capital city. Following Turkey and the Palestinian Authority’s examples, Moroccan King Mohammed VI sent a letter to Trump signed by 57 Arab and Muslim countries warning the US President of the consequences of moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem. Furthermore, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas contacted Pope Francis, French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin in order to request that they intervene and help dissuade Trump.
“Jerusalem must remain the soil for coexistence and tolerance among all,” read the letter sent by King Mohammed VI, who chairs the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Al-Quds Committee. “Transferring the US Embassy to Jerusalem will affect the horizon for creating a just settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The Middle East region is experiencing deep crises that require avoiding anything that will lead to dissatisfaction and frustration that instigate extremism and terrorism.”

As reported earlier today by JOL, Trump spoke this evening with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyhau, Abbas and Jordanian King Abdullah II stating that he intends to transfer the US Embassy to Jerusalem, according to Abbas’s office. Abbas warned Trump of the consequences of such a move on the peace process and the region’s stability. In addition, Abbas claimed that he wouldn’t accept a Palestinian state without East Jerusalem as its capital. Senior-level Palestinian officials claimed that Abbas will continue to speak with world leaders to attempt to dissuade Trump.
