Mosul and its residents are trying to recover from the horrific three-year period of ISIS control over the city. 12-year-old Maryam Samir was shot in the head by an ISIS sniper about six months ago. The bullet severely damaged her face and affected her eyesight. She was shot while trying to escape an ISIS attack on her neighborhood.
Her father thought that she was dead but her mother insisted that they carry her with them as they fled. She eventually underwent surgery to remove the shrapnel from her skull at a hospital in Erbil. Even though she still needs to undergo three more operations, she continues to dream of the day that she will be able to see clearly and live a normal life.

Maryam barely leaves her family home due to the facial damage. She told Sky News’ John Sparks during an interview that the other children tease her because of the way she looks. “They call me ‘the girl with no eyes,’” she explained.
