Though the vote was non-binding, the Australian government announced prior to the poll that if it showed a majority in favor of same-sex marriage, a bill to change the current law will be presented.

An overwhelming majority of Australians has voted in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage in a non-binding vote.

At a press conference following the vote, it was revealed that 61.6% of the people voted support same-sex marriage, while 38.4% oppose it.

The Australian government announced prior to the poll that if it shows most Australians support same-sex marriage, a bill to change the current law will be brought forth to the parliament for approval.
