Ahead of the release of his book “A Higher Loyalty,” former FBI Director James Comey said in an interview that US President Donald Trump is “morally unfit to be president.” However, Comey stressed that he does not believe that Trump should be impeached.

Former FBI Director James Comey criticized US President Donald Trump in an interview that was aired on Sunday night. In the interview, Comey, who was fired by Trump in May of last year, warned that Trump “lies constantly about matters big and small” and is “morally unfit to be president.”

Speaking with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, Comey commented on the possibility of Trump firing special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. “It would, I hope, set off alarm bells that this is his most serious attack yet on the rule of law. And it would be something that our entire country — again, Democrats and Republicans, that is higher than all the normal fights about policy,” he said. “And it would be to the everlasting shame of partisans if they were unable to see that higher level and to protect it.”

During the wide-ranging interview, Comey was asked about his claim that Trump pressured him to drop the investigation into Michael Flynn, the president’s former national security adviser who is now cooperating with Mueller’s investigation. When Stephanopoulos asked Comey whether Trump had obstructed justice in his actions, he replied: “Possibly. I mean, it’s certainly some evidence of obstruction of justice.”

Despite his criticism of Trump, Comey admitted that he does not think Trump should be impeached. “I think impeaching and removing Donald Trump from office would let the American people off the hook and have something happen indirectly that I believe they’re duty bound to do directly,” he explained. “People in this country need to stand up and go to the voting booth and vote their values.”

Comey’s bombshell interview was aired days before the release of his book “A Higher Loyalty.” Trump quickly took to Twitter to slam the former FBI director’s remarks. The US president said that he barely knew Comey and that his notes from their meetings are fake. Trump also called Comey a “slimeball.”
