The French government has condemned the anti-Semitic attack on an 8-year-old boy in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in the Paris suburb of Sarcelles, which took place earlier this week. The boy, who was wearing a kippah, was attacked by two youths.

French President Emmanuel Macron strongly denounced the attack, stating that a child attacked for his age, religion or appearance is an attack on all of France and that France must stand together to fight intolerance. “The French Republic is standing by the Jews and will fight alongside them,” Macron added in a tweet.

French media outlets reported that the two youths spotted the young Jewish boy when he was on his way home after a private lesson. They reportedly kicked him heavily during the attack. A police investigation into the incident has been launched and the local prosecutor stated that the attack was an act of anti-Semitism. The police have not yet arrested the perpetrators.

As France has seen an increase in crime in the past year, it has also seen an increase of about 20 percent in anti-Semitic attacks. According to the French Interior Ministry, 77 anti-Semitic incidents were reported in 2016 and 97 were reported in 2017.
