French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday attended the funeral of Mireille Knoll, 85, a Holocaust survivor who was murdered last week in what authorities in France have classified as an anti-Semitic attack.

The attacker “murdered an innocent, vulnerable woman because she was Jewish,” Macron said at the ceremony, “and by doing that he desecrated our sacred values and history.”

Knoll was murdered by her Muslim neighbor and another suspect, both of whom were indicted on Monday and charged with a hate crime. An autopsy revealed that Knoll had been stabbed several times before her apartment was set on fire.
