North Korea’s state media confirmed on Wednesday that Pyongyang successfully launched a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile that is capable of reaching the United States. The North Korean regime is boasting about the test, claiming that it proves that the country has become a nuclear state. It is believed that the new ICBM, which has been dubbed the Hwasong-15 missile, is the pariah state’s most powerful and advanced projectile.

The North Korean announcement came a few hours after the missile test. The South Korean Yonhap News Agency reported earlier yesterday that the North carried out a ballistic missile test. The Pentagon confirmed that the test was carried out, adding that an ICBM was launched. Japan’s government claimed that the missile was in the air for about 50 minutes, traveling about 1,000 kilometers (about 621 miles), before landing in the Sea of Japan.

US President Donald Trump denounced the launch but added that the test is “a situation we will handle.” The European Union stated that the test is an “unacceptable violation” of Pyongyang’s international obligations. NATO said the test undermines international security.

According to Reuters, Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke over the phone after the test and agreed to increase their cooperation in order to deter Pyongyang from carrying out additional aggressive acts. On Twitter, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the missile test: “This was an irresponsible test by North Korea. The situation strengthens our determination to pressure Pyongyang and stand in solidarity with our partners.”
