A member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee said that US President Donald Trump’s attempts to “blackmail” the UN member-states will fail. “We will not be deterred or intimidated,” the Palestinian news agency Wafa quoted her as saying.

As the emergency UN General Assembly meeting during which the 193 member-states will vote on a motion rejecting the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital approaches, the Palestinians are taking measures to ensure that the resolution passes. On Thursday, the Palestine Liberation Organization said that the United States’ warnings about its plans to punish the states that vote in favor of the resolution will not work.
The Palestinian Authority’s official news site Wafa reported that Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the PLO’s Executive Committee, accused US President Donald Trump of trying to blackmail and extort the UN member states. “President Trump should know that there are things that are not for sale or subject to blackmail,” Ashrawi is quoted as saying. “Extortion is the most effective way for the US to isolate itself even further and to weaken its influence and standing globally.”
“We will not be deterred or intimidated,” she added. “The overwhelming majority of the UN General Assembly members will honor their own legal and political obligations on Palestine.”
As previously reported by JOL, Trump warned on Wednesday that the US will cut the aid it provides to countries that choose to vote against the American recognition. “They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars and then they vote against us,” Trump told reporters. “Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care.”
