On Tuesday morning, Polish President Andrzej Duda announced he will approve the controversial Holocaust bill. The bill was condemned by Israel and the US, which claimed that Polish leaders are trying to rewrite history.

Polish President Andrzej Duda stated Tuesday that he will approve the controversial Holocaust bill that eradicates responsibility and blame from Poland for Nazi war crimes from WWII. It further allows for criminal punishment of up to three years imprisonment for stating phrases such as “Polish death camps” or publicly announcing Poland’s involvement.

Duda acknowledged that there were indeed anti-Semitic crimes and incidents that took place during WWII in Poland. However, he asserted that the Poles were not responsible for the systemic murder of Jews in WWII. He also said that he hopes this bill will not interfere with the strong relations between Israel and Poland.

Duda has further stated that he will need to consult with the Constitutional Tribunal about the bill but will still allow it to pass into law. The president’s passing of the law is the final step the bill needs to be implemented into law.

As previously reported by JOL, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to his Polish counterpart Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and urged him to reconsider the advancement of the bill. Netanyahu has stated that the bill risks the “whitewashing” of history while Morawiecki states the bill serves to “expose the truths” about the Nazi war crimes committed during the Holocaust.
