Last night (Monday), Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump faced off during the first debate of the 2016 race. Despite the smiles and handshakes, the voices quickly escalated and Trump attacked within the first few minutes: “Hillary has experience but it’s bad experience.” Clinton accused Trump of not paying taxes and chauvinism. According to a CNN poll, 62% of last night’s viewers believe that Clinton won the debate while only 27% believe that Trump was the winner.

Israel was not mentioned in the debate but the nuclear deal with Iran led to a dispute between the two leading US presidential candidates. Trump claimed that Iran can become a super power thanks to the deal: “This is one of the worst deals ever made by any country in history. The deal with Iran will lead to nuclear problems…I met with Bibi Netanyahu the other day. Believe me, he’s not a happy camper.” In addition, Trump said that the “single greatest problem the world has is nuclear armament, nuclear weapons, not global warming.”

Clinton replied: “Iran was weeks away from having enough nuclear material to form a bomb. They had mastered the nuclear fuel cycle under the Bush administration. They had built covert facilities. They had stocked them with centrifuges that were whirling away.” Clinton also said that Trump claimed that American sailors should have shot the Iranians who arrested them: “So a man who can be provoked by a tweet should not have his fingers anywhere near the nuclear codes.”

This morning, 18 out of the 20 undecided voters CNN interviewed determined that Clinton won last night’s crucial debate. A representative from Clinton’s campaign said that Trump was unprepared for the debate and CNN’s Wolf Blitzer said that the Democratic presidential candidate got under Trump’s skin.

However, CBS News contributor Bob Schieffer said: “I don’t think Donald Trump lost any votes tonight [and] I’m not sure Hillary Clinton gained any votes tonight.”
