Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas was warned by US President Donald Trump of upcoming cuts in American aid through a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a senior PA official said Friday.
During their meeting in Moscow last week, Putin reportedly told Abbas that he and Trump had discussed the Middle East conflict, and warned him that Trump was planning cuts in funding to the Palestinians unless they returned to the negotiating table.
According to PA Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki, Abbas was told that the US would restrict its financial aid to Palestinian security only. Maliki added that Putin expressed his support of the Palestinian people.
In an interview with right-wing Israeli daily newspaper Israel Hayom, published last week, Trump said the Palestinians “aren’t willing” to reach a peace agreement, but added that Israel might not be ready for it either.
