Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Tehran on Wednesday, meeting with both Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. During their meeting, Rouhani told his Russian counterpart that Moscow is a “friend, neighbor and strategic partner” of Iran, as quoted by Iran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim.
Rouhani and Putin also discussed several topics including their countries’ roles in Syria and the nuclear deal. Both Iran and Russia are major allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Khamenei told Putin that Tehran and Moscow need to continue to work together in order to isolate Washington and stabilize the Middle East, Reuters reported, citing Iranian state television.
