A Russian military transport plane crashed in Syria on Tuesday, killing the 26 passengers and six crew members on board. The crash took place at Khmeimim Airbase in Syria as the airplane attempted to land. According to Russian news agencies, it appears that the crash was caused by a technical issue.

The Kremlin stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent his condolences to the families of the 32 people who were killed in the crash, the news agencies added.

Tuesday’s crash is not the first crash in Syria for Russia, which is one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s main allies. In December 2016, a Russian aircraft that was on its way to Syria crashed into the Black Sea, killing the 92 people who were on board.
