Just a few hours after it was reported that at least 12 people have been killed so far in the massive anti-government protests in Iran, US President Donald Trump tweeted that the Iranians are “hungry for food & for freedom.” Trump also said that despite the nuclear deal, Iran “is failing at every level.”

US President Donald Trump started 2018 by tweeting that a change needs to be made in Iran and slamming former President Barack Obama’s administration for signing the nuclear deal with Tehran.

“Iran is failing at every level despite the terrible deal made with them by the Obama Administration,” Trump wrote on Twitter on New Year’s Day. “The great Iranian people have been repressed for many years. They are hungry for food & for freedom. Along with human rights, the wealth of Iran is being looted. TIME FOR CHANGE!”

Earlier today, the death toll from the anti-government protests across Iran rose to 12. Hundreds of protesters have been arrested since the massive demonstrations began over the weekend. Trump previously voiced his support for the protests on Twitter, writing that the Iranian people are “finally getting wise as to how their money and wealth is being stolen and squandered on terrorism.”

“Looks like they will not take it any longer,” he added. “The USA is watching very closely for human rights violations!” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani responded to Trump’s remarks on Sunday. “The Iranian people don’t need sympathy from someone who calls them terrorists,” he said. “The Iranians understand that there are sensitive situations. We will act in accordance with the interests of Iran.”
