U.S. President Donald Trump met with Pope Francis on Wednesday at the Vatican. The two exchanged gifts at the end of the meeting. During Trump’s election campaign, the two criticized each other.
Reporters who covered Trump’s meeting with the Pope said that the U.S. president was excited to see the Pontifical Swiss Guard. Trump’s wife Melania, daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner accompanied the U.S. president and met the Pope as well.

Trump told the Pope that it was an honor to meet him just before the two posed for pictures. “What do you give him to eat, potizza?” the Pope asked Melania, referring to a Slovenian cake. “Potizza,” she replied smiling.
After the meeting, Trump gave the Pope books that were written by Martin Luther King. “I think you will enjoy them,” Trump told the Pope. In return, the Pope gave Trump an olive tree medal that symbolizes peace. Trump thanked him and said: “We can use peace.”
