US President Donald Trump met with his Guatemalan counterpart on Thursday and thanked him for supporting his stance on Jerusalem. The two met in Washington before Trump made an appearance at this year’s National Prayer Breakfast.

“President Trump thanked President [Jimmy] Morales for supporting the United States and Israel, and for his announced decision to move the Guatemalan embassy to Jerusalem,” a White House readout stated.

Morales announced his decision to move Guatemala’s embassy to Jerusalem about two weeks after Trump’s December 6 statement. In a post on his official Facebook page, Morales said he made the decision after speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

A few days later, Guatemalan Foreign Minister Sandra Jovel denied the reports claiming that Washington pressured Guatemala into announcing the embassy move. “There wasn’t any pressure,” she said. “The decision was made by the government as part of our foreign policy.”
