UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged US President Donald Trump on Thursday to remain in the Iran nuclear deal, claiming that leaving it will lead to “dangerous times.”

Withdrawing from the deal risks a real possibility of war if the agreement is not maintained, said Guterres in today’s interview with BBC.

“We should not scrap it unless we have a good alternative,” he said. “We face dangerous times.”

According to a Reuters report, Trump is expected to withdraw from the agreement. However, two administration officials and another source said that it is still unclear how he will walk away from it.

Trump has been a strong critic of the Iran nuclear deal, which was signed in 2015 under the Obama administration. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent reveal of the Iranian nuclear weapons archive and claims that Iran had covertly pursued nuclear weapons could give Trump a fresh argument for withdrawal.
