Students at the University of Udine in Italy have developed a hard-boiled egg consisting of only plant-based materials. The new food product, which reportedly looks and tastes like a real hard-boiled egg, will be ready to eat immediately after purchase, not requiring any cooking or baking. The egg-less egg consists of legume-based flour, various combinations of vegetables and salt.

Four students worked on the vegan hard-boiled egg project for a year and a half in the university’s food science laboratory and they have already patented their unique idea. The university said in an official statement that the new product is gluten-free and does not contain any cholesterol. The university also said that now that the vegan hard-boiled egg has been patented, the new product will be presented to global food companies in the coming weeks.
