US President Donald Trump’s Jerusalem announcement will likely “return us to darker times,” warned the European Union on Thursday. Next week, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Brussels.
Watch: Trump’s full speech
The European Union clarified on Thursday that US President Donald Trump’s announcement recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital does not match the European position and will likely “return us to darker times.”
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini already criticized Trump’s declaration last night and this morning, she stressed that Jerusalem “needs to be the capital of the two states- Israel and Palestine.”

“The European Union has a clear and united policy: we believe that the only realistic solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is based on two states and Jerusalem as the capital of both,” she said today at a press conference.
Mogherini added that she will meet tomorrow with the Jordanian foreign minister, whose country also condemned Trump’s speech. On Monday, Mogherini is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Brussels.
Russia on Thursday warned that Trump’s speech will have consequences. According to Russian media outlets, Moscow’s UN representatives are expected to slam Trump’s position on Jerusalem during tomorrow’s UNSC meeting.
