While in India on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended the Israeli forces that destroyed a Hamas terror tunnel that stretched from Gaza to Egypt and crossed into Israeli territory directly under the Kerem Shalom border crossing. Netanyahu also warned the Gaza-based terrorist groups against carrying out hostile acts against Israel.

“We are here in India on a historic visit…But even when I am here in India, I think of you, IDF soldiers, and of the splendid work that you did yesterday in eliminating another tunnel,” Netanyahu said at the beginning of his meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. “We are systematically eliminating the tunnel infrastructure of Hamas and Islamic Jihad; they should not try us.”

Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Yoav Mordechai said in an interview Sunday with the Arabic-language Alhurra news network that Israel has attacked three terror tunnels in the past month and a half. “We detected and attacked all three of these tunnels from Israel, from Israel’s sovereign territory- and that’s not by chance,” he said.

The IDF confirmed on Sunday morning that it completely destroyed the terror tunnel in an airstrike. The 1.5-kilometer (about 0.93-mile) long tunnel passed under several strategic Israeli targets such as a gas pipeline.

The tunnel belonged to Hamas and could have been used to smuggle weapons and terrorists from Egypt into the Gaza Strip. In addition, it could have been used as an attack tunnel to carry out a serious terror attack on the border crossing from the Egyptian side.
