South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) party has passed a resolution to downgrade the South African embassy in Tel Aviv to a “liaison office,” in a move aimed at expressing support for the Palestinians.

This unprecedented move comes amid severe international backlash following US President Donald Trump’s declaration that the US recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule said Thursday the decision was unanimous. “Delegates endorsed the proposal that we must give the support to the oppressed people of Palestine and resolve on an immediate and unconditional downgrade of the South African embassy to a liaison office,” he said.
