British International Development Secretary Priti Patel resigned from the government on Wednesday, a day after she admitted to having secretly met with senior Israeli officials during a visit to Israel.

Patel handed in her resignation letter to Prime Minister Theresa May after the latter summoned her back from a trip to Africa over the new revelations. She wrote that her actions “fell below the high standards” expected of her, apologizing for causing a “distraction” for the government.

May accepted Patel’s apology, adding that her decision to resign was the right one. “Now that further details have come to light, it is right that you have decided to resign and adhere to the high standards of transparency and openness that you have advocated,” May told Patel.
