A North Korean official in Geneva accused the US and South Korea of plotting to overthrow Kim Jong-un. According to the official, the countries’ armies are currently practicing this plan during this year’s annual joint drill.

During a discussion held by the UN on Tuesday, North Korea continued its policy of hostility toward the US. “Our nuclear defense capabilities will never be on the negotiating table,” said a North Korean diplomat in Geneva.
“The efforts to strengthen our nuclear defense system and the continuation of our intercontinental missile system are legitimate and justified self-defense steps given the nuclear threat from the US,” stated North Korean diplomat Ju Yong Chol. The diplomat added that Pyongyang will not limit its nuclear program.
Ju also criticized the joint drill currently being conducted by the US and South Korea, claiming that it is an aggressive war maneuver ahead of a planned attack on North Korea. He also said that the military exercise includes a plot to overthrow the regime in Pyongyang. “Their military adventure only adds fuel to the fire,” Ju added.
The US, however, opposed the idea of canceling or postponing this year’s annual drill with South Korea. Head of the US Army’s Pacific Command Admiral Harry Harris stated on Monday that the diplomatic efforts are playing a crucial role in the attempts to resolve the crisis with North Korea.
“A strong diplomatic effort backed by a strong military effort is key because credible combat power should be in support of diplomacy and not the other way around,” he said during a press conference in South Korea. Commander of US Forces Korea Vincent Brooks said that the US allies in the Far East need to continue the drills until they “have reason not to.”
