Amid the growing tensions between America and North Korea, Pyongyang carried out a ballistic missile test that failed near the Sinpo shipyard on Sunday, according to the U.S. and South Korea.
The U.S. Army said that the missile exploded almost immediately after it was launched. A U.S. military official said that it is still unclear what type of missile was used in the failed test and that America is completely committed to working with its allies, South Korea and Japan, in order to maintain the security in the region. U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were updated about the trial but the White House has not yet released an official statement.
South Korea strongly condemned the test and said that the launch is a threat to the whole world. “The military parade yesterday and the missile launch today are a show of force that threatens the stability of the world,” stated the South Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The statement also warned Pyongyang that the continuation of provocations, including nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches, will prompt Seoul to strongly respond.
The failed missile test comes just a day after Pyongyang held an extensive military parade to mark the 105th birthday of North Korea’s founding father Kim Il-sung.
