According to Lyle Plocher, US President Barack Obama could still have a surprise in store for Israel as his last days in the White House approach. However, Plocher believes that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President-elect Donald Trump have taken some pro-active steps in order to reduce the likelihood of another anti-Israel surprise before January 20.

Many pro-Israel supporters are concerned that the passage of UN Resolution 2334 and John Kerry’s follow-up speech are not the end of Obama’s anti-Israel attacks in his final days in Office. With several days to go until the Inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States, Obama will have more opportunities to inflict further damage on Israel. One of the more obvious opportunities will be immediately following the French-sponsored so called Peace Conference, which will be held in Paris on January 15. The stated goal of this conference, which may be attended by representatives of up to 70 countries, is to promote a “two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There is a tremendous amount of concern in Israel that whatever is agreed upon at this conference will immediately be used as the basis for a UN Security Council resolution that would permanently divide the land of Israel and create a Palestinian state.

One of the greatest concerns is that an additional UN Resolution could come out of the deliberations of these 70 or so countries at the conference in Paris. It just so happens that sometime between January 17th and 19th, the UN Security Council is scheduled to meet. A very possible scenario at this meeting could be the introduction of a new and more damaging UN Resolution advanced by one of the attendees at the Paris conference, which would recognize “Palestine” and grant it full membership in the UN. If that were to happen, Israel would find themselves again at the mercy of Obama’s vote or abstention from voting.

A pro-active approach to influencing this potential resolution and subsequent vote could be taken by both Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump. That pro-active approach could include putting pressure on certain members of the UN Security Council. This is a strategy mentioned by columnist Caroline Glick in a recent article. In her words, “To scuttle another resolution, Israel needs to convince seven members of the Security Council not to support it. Only measures that secure the support of 9 out of 15 Security Council members are permitted to come to a vote. The states that are most susceptible to Israeli lobbying are Italy, Ethiopia, Japan, Egypt, Uruguay, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Russia”.

Who knows what the mindset is at the current time of the Security Council Member nations after Netanyahu took several steps to express his displeasure with 2334, including ceasing $6 million in funding to the UN and his chastisement of 12 of the UN Security Council Member countries that have diplomatic ties with Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered his nation’s Foreign Ministry to temporarily limit all working ties with the embassies of 12 UN Security Council members who voted in favor of 2334. According to a CNN report, business was to be suspended with the embassies of Britain, France, Russia, China, Japan, Ukraine, Angola, Egypt, Uruguay, Spain, Senegal and New Zealand. Netanyahu said he would not meet with the foreign ministers of those countries and their ambassadors would not be received at Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

There have to be other pro-active measures that could be taken to discourage any further UN Security Council Resolutions against Israel in the final days of the Obama administration, let’s just hope that between them, Bibi and Donald come up with the winning strategies.
