As reported earlier on JOL, the Israeli Police asked today (Monday) that the court keep MK Basel Ghattas in custody for 4 more days. He is suspected of smuggling cellphones to security prisoners. Outside the courthouse, a protest was held in support of Ghattas. The court ordered Ghattas to spend one more day in custody. Ghattas sought to hold a discussion with security prisoner Waleed Daka if he will not be charged but the police refused.

The police claim that there are still some investigative actions that can only be done when the MK is in custody. When Ghattas arrived at the discussion, he said, “When the investigation will be over, then I’ll talk.”

Yesterday, the police searched Ghattas’ office and came out with a box of files. This is the third time in history that this kind of search was made against a Knesset member. In 2007, a similar search was performed on Ghattas’ cousin former MK Azmi Bishara, who is suspected of security offenses and fled the country.
