Environmental activists threw smoke grenades into a trash can near Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea on Friday, during a demonstration against the government’s plan to build a natural gas rig close to the shore.
Police said an investigation into the incident has been opened. They added that the grenades had been neutralized by a sapper. No injuries or property damage were reported.
About 800 people demonstrated outside Netanyahu’s home on Friday, demanding that the government change its plan to build the Leviathan natural gas rig only 10 km away from northern-Israeli beaches.
“Do not build the most polluting petrochemical plant in the history of the country near the beach and residential areas,” stated the organizers of the protest.
