A North Korean soldier was shot and injured as he was crossing the demilitarized zone in a successful attempt to escape the country, according to various reports. He was found by South Korean troops 50 meters south of the border village of Panmunjom.

“The defector was urgently transferred to [a] hospital in a helicopter of the United Nations Command, and there was no exchange of fire with our side,” a South Korean defense ministry official told Reuters on Monday. “Since it was an area exposed to the North, we had to crawl toward there to get him out.”

The soldier, whose rank is still unknown, suffered shoulder and elbow wounds, the official added. South Korea’s news agency Yonhap News, quoting a military official, wrote: “The military has raised its alertness against the North Korean military’s possible provocations and is maintaining its full readiness posture.”
