The U.S.-backed Syrian militias managed to gain complete control over Raqqa, ISIS’ de facto capital in Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated Tuesday. According to the organization, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have won the battle for the city, which began in June.

Reuters reported that while the fighting appears to be almost over, occasional bursts of gunfire can still be heard throughout the city. The SDF members have already begun celebrating their victory in the streets. The flag of the Kurdish YPG, the strongest militia in the SDF, has been placed in the middle of the city’s stadium.

An SDF spokesperson stated that the alliance will capture the final areas that are still under the control of ISIS within the next few hours. A few days ago, it was reported that an evacuation agreement was reached for the terrorists in the city. However, it was feared that they would take hundreds of civilian hostages with them.

The SDF is an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias that is backed by the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS. The forces have been fighting to expel ISIS from the city’s streets over the past few months.
