Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas snubbed a Republican Congress delegation visiting Ramallah a mere week after meeting with Democrats

Instead of meeting with Abbas, the Republican delegation met with PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh.

Today I met with 37 members of the US Congress to brief them on the latest political developments. I stressed that we want relations between the US and Palestine to be independent from Israel – and that we are committed to peace towards realizing Palestine’s legitimate rights, Shtayyeh said on his Twitter account.

Last week, a delegation of 41 Democratic members of Congress visited Israel to meet with PA President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. Democratic House Leader Steny Hoyer expressed disappointment after his talks with Abbas.

“Frankly, I did not hear anything from Mahmoud Abbas again.”He indicated that he was ready to sit down and negotiate [with Israel] without conditions, and then he referred to a number of preconditions.”

However, Hoyer added that it was “very important” that members of the delegation had the opportunity to hear the Palestinian leader, who has been in power since 2005.
