The Israeli judo team was only two fights away from winning its second bronze medal in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, but judoka Linda Bolder was defeated on Wednesday by Maria Bernabeu from Spain. Israeli swimmer Yakov Toumarkin qualified for the men’s 200m backstroke semifinals, which is scheduled to be held around 4:30 a.m. Israel time.

“I gave it my all. There was nothing else I could do,” said Dutch-born Bolder, whose day at the Olympics started off on a strong note with two wins, leading her all the way up to the quarterfinals, where she lost to the UK’s Sally Conway. She then lost to Bernabeu in the repechage tournament. “She completely dominated the fight,” Bolder admitted.

In the swimming tournament, Yakov Toumarkin qualified for the men’s 200m backstroke semifinals after finishing fifth in his heat and 16th overall with a time of 1:57:58.

Amit Ivri failed to qualify for the women’s 200m breaststroke semifinals after finishing 28th overall.

On Tuesday, Israeli judoka Yarden Gerbi won a bronze medal through the repechage path, after defeating Japan’s Miku Tashiro. She thus became the first Israeli Olympic medalist since Beijing 2008.
