Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Wednesday called on the government to make “urgent” efforts to rehabilitate the eastern part of Jerusalem, saying it has become the poorest area in the country.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of Jerusalem’s reunification, Rivlin said, “We mustn’t accept the fact that our capital city is in such a low socioeconomic status. Sovereignty means responsibility for each and every resident of Jerusalem.”

“It is our obligation to act immediately in order to save Jerusalem and make it a truly united city,” Rivlin concluded.
