The Russian Defense Ministry announced that a military plane with 91 passengers that took off from Sochi crashed in the Black Sea en route to the Latakia Airport in Syria. A rescue team found the remains of the plane in the sea. Among the passengers were journalists and a military band.

A Russian military plane that disappeared from the radar seconds after taking off from the city of Sochi crashed in the Black Sea, the Russian media reported. According to the report, the plane belonged to the Russian Defense Ministry and was en route to Syria.

According to the report, the Tu-154 plane contained 91 passengers among them journalists and a military band as well as 9 crew members.  It disappeared from the radar at 5:40am only 20 seconds after taking off.

The Russian Aviation Authority updated the media that it was not a civilian plane but they would not go into detail about this. The Russian News Agency reported that the initial rescue team most likely found the site of the crash around 6 kilometers (3.73 miles) off the coast of Sochi.
