Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Ha-Bayit Ha-Yehudi) clarified Tuesday that as long as her political party is in the coalition, terrorists will not be released as part of a prisoner exchange with Hamas.
Shaked’s remarks came just three days after Shin Bet veteran Yaron Blum, who was involved in the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange, was named as the new coordinator for the release of the Israeli citizens held by Hamas in Gaza. “Everything that happened in the Gilad Shalit deal will not repeat itself,” she stated. “I think everyone knows this today.”
Shaked added that while the cabinet members have received the 2012 Shamgar Committee’s report, which reviewed Israel’s prisoner exchanges, they have not yet had the time to examine it. “It was on the cabinet table twice but we haven’t gotten around to discussing it,” she explained. “I’m sure we will have a serious discussion about it and I also hope that decisions will be made.”
In August, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that the country “must not repeat the mistakes made in the Shalit prisoner exchange.”
“As part of the deal, we released 1,027 terrorists, among them murderers and their handlers including Mahmoud Qawasmeh, who was expelled to Gaza and funded the kidnapping of the three teenage boys, and Yahya Sinwar, who leads Hamas in Gaza,” Lieberman said. The Israeli minister added: “I continue to be personally committed to the return of Hadar and Oron to Israel and [the return of] our citizens who are being held in the Gaza Strip in violation of international law.”
